BOST® New Material helps improve Anti-Stain in float glass sheets, ultra-clean glass sheets, online coated glass, and various types of deep-processed glass.

Glass Quality Control: Glass Weathering Mildew Issue

Upon leaving the production lines, glass sheets may appear stable, but weathering reactions on the glass have just begun.

Initially, the surface of the glass is slightly blurry and rough. Although this roughness might not be visible to the naked eye, it indicates that the glass will be difficult to clean and prone to staining.

Subsequently, these rough areas grow into small spots scattered across the glass, gradually transforming into flakes, filaments, or massive mildew formations.

Finally, when light reflects on the mildew, it creates a rainbow effect, and the rough texture becomes clearly visible and tangible. Poor clarity and transparency categorize this piece of glass as defective.

How Did the Glass Mildew Occur?

At the onset of weathering, the glass surface undergoes a reaction with moisture in the atmosphere:

This reaction can be represented as: ≡ Si ― O ― Na + H₂O → ≡ SiOH + NaOH

As a result of this reaction, the glass surface becomes alkaline, creating tiny spots on the glass known as Alkali Precipitation.

When the pH value of the glass surface exceeds 9, the alkali starts to attack and dissolve the basic silicate network:

This reaction can be represented as: SiO₂ + 4NaOH = Na₄SiO₄ + 2H₂O

These reactions lead to the erosion and damage of the glass structure, resulting in a rough surface, rainbow stains, and a decrease in transparency.

How to Prevent Glass Weathering?

Shenzhen BOST® shares five common solutions to improve glass weathering resistance as follows:

  1. Adopt a more suitable glass raw material formula to enhance the chemical stability of the glass structure.
  2. Optimize the oxidation and reduction atmosphere of the melting furnace, optimize the temperature of the tin bath, and adjust the annealing process to improve the stability of the glass surface.
  3. Improve the transportation and storage environment.
  4. Shorten the storage time.
  5. Use appropriate anti-stain treatments on the glass surface, such as applying BOST® glass anti-stain interleaving powder through spraying.
